Proto-Germanic origin
Source-reportedUncertain. First element speculated to be related to ahil, agil (“awn”), ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”), compare *h₂eḱrós (“sharp”), *h₂óḱris (“sharp edge”). Second element likely from the diminutive suffix -zio, -zo, itself perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *-iti ~ *-ittjas (from Proto-Germanic *-itją) + *-ō.
