According to Henning, probably borrowed from Proto-Sogdic *rmn. This is repeated by Herzenberg who cites Henning. According to Herzenberg, probably related to the Old Avestan root *ar (“to move, set in motion”), which is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (whence English run), and unrelated to English arm, Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌽 (arman), and Vandalic *arman, which are ultimately from *h₂er-. Another explanation is a connection to Parthian [script needed] (frmnywg), which Henning compares to Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬵 (framanah). Unrelated to ارمن (arman, “Armenia”).
