Proto-Indo-European origin
Source-reportedInherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásitas, further perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂nsi- (“dark, black”). Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬁𐬵𐬌𐬙𐬀 (āhita, “tainted, unclean”), Khotanese [script needed] (hätänai, “red”). The Indo-European source is reconstructed based on a comparison with Hittite [script needed] (ḫa-an-za-na-aš /ḫanzana-/, “black; web”), and Ancient Greek ἄσις (ásis, “slime, mud”), but this is uncertain.
