Etymology in the sources
Source-reportedUncertain; traditionally derived from bēo (“bee”) + wulf (“wolf”), used as a kenning for “bear” or “woodpecker”. Most recently analysed theophorically from Bēow (“Beow”) + wulf (“wolf”). Probably cognate with Old Norse Bjólfr (from earlier *Bíolfr, *Béolfr).
