Old Norse origin
Source-reportedDerived from Old Norse Eyvindr. The modern form was revived as a historical-literary name during the Nordic name renaissance in the mid-19th century. The Old Norse name continues *Auja-winduʀ, traditionally analysed as containing an element related to *awją (“luck, good fortune”) and the name element *-winduʀ (“victor, victorious lord”), although the precise origin and interpretation of the elements remain somewhat uncertain. Doublet of Even (“male given name”), the inherited Norwegian continuation of the same Old Norse name. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Eivind, Faroese Eivindur, Danish Ejvind and Swedish Ejvind (“male given name”).
