Proto-Celtic origin
Source-reportedFrom Middle Irish Eógan, from Primitive Irish ᚔᚃᚑᚌᚓᚅᚔ (ivogeni, gen.sg.), from Proto-Celtic *Iwogenos (literally “yew-born”). Cognate with Scottish Gaelic Eòghann. Sometimes conflated or confused with the etymologically unrelated name Eoin (“John”), with which the vocative/genitive form Eoghain is homophonous.
