Etymology in the sources
Source-reported*/pumiko/ → /fumiko/ A surface analysis suggests that this may have originated as a compound of 文 (fumi, “letters, writing; literature”) + 子 (ko, “child”, also a diminutive suffix common in female given names). Compare the English expression woman of letters. As with many names, there is a wide variety of possible kanji spellings, where the kanji characters themselves lend additional meanings and nuances to the name.
