Historically derived from the Turkic/Mongolic title Khan and the Crimean Tatar dynastic name Giray, which was heavily assimilated into Circassian nobility. Although it is a Turkic origin name, it is unique to Circassians within this specific cultural context and came to Turkey from Circassia.
