Old High German origin
Source-reportedLikely a borrowing from Old High German Hezilo, possibly the compound of *hadu (“battle”) + -zo (“diminutive suffix”) + -ilo (“diminutive suffix”). The first element combines hadu- and -zo into haz-, which is then further influenced by i-umlaut. Double diminutives, with the first diminutive element being -zo, were common in Old High German personal names. Alternatively, the Old High German Hezilo could be the compound term of haz + -ilo, where haz- could either mean 'hate' or be a deriving from *hadu, not necessarily influenced by -zo. Either way, a Dutch origin seems unlikely because of this name's late emergence and -z- being very uncommon.
