Biblical Hebrew origin
Source-reportedMeaning: “God has been gracious”
A spelling variant of Jon and John, with doubled ⟨n⟩ representing a short vowel followed by long /nː/. Ultimately a short form of Johannes, from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yōḥānān, “Yahweh is gracious”). First attested in the early 19th century in Norway. Compare Danish Jonn, Swedish Jonn and Faroese Jonn (“male given name”).
