Etymology in the sources
Source-reportedOriginal meaning: not settled in the sources.
Disputed. Possibly by apheresis from a Scandinavian form of Iacobus; alternatively related to kaup (“trade, goods”), an early Germanic loan, in an agent sense “merchant” — compare archaic Finnish kauppi (“merchant”). First attested as Latin Caupo in the Chronicon Livoniae (c. 1224–1227). Compare Finnish Kauppi.
