Source-reportedMartzloff presumes that this name is derived from the gerundive of a verb, presumably of the shape *kluθō, which he also sees in Paelignian clisuist (which all other scholars connect to Latin clūsus instead). He further connects this term to a neo-root of the shape *ḱlew-dʰ- (“to call”), an extension of *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Martzloff compares structurally similar phrases in Ancient Greek and Sanskrit, such as "κλέος καταθέσθαι (kléos katathésthai)" ("to acquire glory") and śravas dhā- ("to award/acquire glory"). However, as noted by Prósper, the *dʰ-extension itself is not attested elsewhere for this root, and the related Italic verbs (e.g. Latin clueō (“to be called”) and South Picene 𐌊𐌃𐌖𐌝𐌞 (kduíú, “kduíú”)) are passive in meaning.
