von dem altnordischen Wort Liulfr ^(→ non), was von „Wolf“ abgeleitet ist. Der Wolf steht für Stärke und Klugheit. In der altfranzösischen Schreibweise l'isle ^(→ fr) bedeutet es „von der Insel“was auf die altenglischen und schottischen Wurzeln der Namensträger hinweist. Hier ist der Name vor allem auch als Nachname verbreitet. So ist der Lyall Clan ein Sept des Clan Sinclair. Im Altenglischen kommt der Name von „loyal“ und bedeutet soviel wie der Ehrliche, der Gewissenhafte, aber auch der Unentwegte. Zudem wird er als Variante des englischen Namens „Lionel“ (der Löwe), des schottischen Namens „Lye“ (kommt von laoidh ^(→ gd) und bedeutet Gedicht oder Lied) und des nordischen Namen „Leif“ (der Geliebte) genannt.
