Meaning: “who is like God?”
A vernacular form of the given name Mikael, now rare as a given name. Possibly via Late Old Swedish Michel. * (town): Named after Michael the Archangel, to whom the local church was dedicated. The name is first found in records in the early 17th century, prior to which the parish was called Savilahti. In Finnish, towns named after individuals are often left as is. Compare Pietari (“St Petersburg”), Antrea (from St Andrew), Loviisa, Kaarina (“St Catherine”) and Marttila (“St Martin”).
