Source-reportedMeaning: “to remember” + “lively, wayward, arrogant”
(Balto-Slavic origin:) Uncertain etymology. First attested in the 14th century. Compare Belarusian Мінігайла (Minihajla) and Polish Minigiełło. (Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars who study Baltic onomastics claimed that the name Bargaila and its Slavic cognates are of Gothic origin and that they are composed of minan (“to remember”) + gails (“lively, wayward, arrogant”) (cognated to German Minigel). This perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.
