Meaning in the sources
Source-reportedMeaning: “spring beauty”
From 春(はる) (haru, “spring”) + 美(み) (-mi, a suffix used in female given names). The latter is thought to derive from an Old Japanese feminine suffix; the kanji 美 (“beauty”) is ateji (当(あ)て字(じ)). However, although it is originally just a feminine name relating to spring, it is also commonly thought of with the meaning “spring beauty”. The alternative spellings are also ateji, as is common in names, and are frequently interpreted with their own meanings as well.
