Proto-Germanic origin
Source-reportedFrom Proto-West Germanic *Hrōþiwulf, from Proto-Germanic *Hrōþiwulfaz. Equivalent to a compound of *ruoth + *wulf, though there is no evidence the first element would still have been present in Old Dutch. Compare Old English Roþulf, Old High German Ruodolf and Old Norse Hrólfr.
