Adyghe origin
Source-reportedFrom West Circassian West Circassian Сэфэрбий (Sɛfɛrbij) (Seferbiy). Historically associated with prominent figures such as Seferbiy Zaneqo (Zanoko Seferbey), Circassian diplomat and military leader during the Russo-Circassian War. It is composed of originally Arabic and Turkic elements (Arabic صَفَر (ṣafar, “Safar”) and the Turkic title *bēg (“bey, chief”)) that were adopted into Circassian nobility, but this specific naming usage came to Turkey via the Circassian diaspora. The spelling was adapted to standard Turkish phonology.
