Source-reportedUnknown. First attested in the early 18th century BCE. Huehnergard (2008) considers the possibility that it derives from a root *sur- (with "the common Semitic nominal ending -ān"), which might be connected to هِرّ (hirr), since a change of Proto-Semitic *s to West Semitic *h is known to have occurred in a very small number of words.
