Source-reportedMeaning: “hope”
From toivo (“hope”). Judging by place names (names of farmsteads), it was a personal name in pre-Christian Finland. The given name was revived in the mid-19th century. The surname may in some cases be derived from this old given name (via farm names), but in some cases may be shortened from Toiviainen, Toivanen, or simply adopted directly as a surname (during the Fennicization of surnames).
