Byzantine Greek origin
Source-reportedInherited from Ottoman Turkish تركیه (türkiye), from earlier Ottoman Turkish تركیا (türkiya), from Latin Turcia, ultimately from Byzantine Greek Τουρκίᾱ (Tourkíā, “Turkey”). Probably borrowed via Italian Turchia, as suggested by the earlier form. By surface analysis, Türk + -iye. Explanations deriving it from Arabic تُرْكِيَّة (turkiyya) are folk etymologies.
