Source-reportedMeaning: “power, authority” + “army”
From Proto-West Germanic *Waldahari. Equivalent to walt (“power, authority”) + heri (“army”). Cognate with Old English Waldhere. During the Middle Ages, the name may sometimes have been erroneously or punningly linked to wald (“forest”), for example in the Latin epic Waltharius.
