Old French origin
Source-reportedThe etymology is not completely clear. It is certainly a diminutive form of a first element Woit-. It is suggested that this first element comes from the given name *Waltheri, which was borrowed into Old French Waltier, and then reborrowed without the final -ier, resulting in Woit-. This theory is supported by the fact that in some later documents the name Boidīnus is found as an equivalent of Old Dutch *Baltwini, showing the same -alt- → -oit- change.
