Elamite origin
Source-reportedOriginal meaning: not settled in the sources.
Uncertain. Either from Old Iranian or Elamite: *due to the Old Iranian character of the names of Teispes's father and son, Mayrhofer considers it likely that the name CiΕ‘piΕ‘ is also Old Iranian; ** Hinz suggested a link to Avestan Avestan π¬π¬π¬π¬―- (kaΔs-, βto teachβ) (π¬π¬π¬±- (ciΕ‘-)), Abaev proposed that it is an Old Iranian cognate of Sanskrit ΰ€Έΰ₯ΰ€Άΰ€Ώΰ€Άΰ₯ΰ€΅ΰ€Ώ (sΓΊ-ΕiΕvi-, βgrowing wellβ), while Harmatta proposed a link to Sogdian Sogdian πΌΏπΌΎπΌ°πΌ·π½ (cpΚΎyΕ‘ /β capΔ«Ε‘β /, βleaderβ), but Tavernier considers these unconvincing; *due to the Elamite origin of the name of Teispes's descendant Cyrus, Tavernier has proposed a derivation from Elamite [Term?] (/β Ε‘iΕ‘naβ /)/[Term?] (/β Ε‘iΕ‘niβ /, βbeautifulβ), which occurs in the form Elamite [script needed] (Ε‘iΕ‘) in compounds, and the verbal stem Elamite [Term?] (/β piΕ‘-β /, βto renew, restoreβ) has been proposed, although the use of the sign Z/Ε iΕ‘ to write the first part makes this proposal since Elamite Ε‘iΕ‘n- during the Achaemenid period was always written with Ε I (π ) and never with ZΓ (π’). This proposal is, however, rejected by Schmitt, who prefers an Iranian origin.
