Etymology in the sources
Source-reportedApparently not mentioned by STEDT. Hill (2019) (section 208a, page 213) compares the word to Tibetan སྔོ (sngo, “green”), which STEDT derives from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-ŋow (“white, green, yellow, blue”). This appears phonetically sound (Hill 2019 is a treatise on finding Sino-Tibetan cognates using comparative sound laws), but semantically flies in the face of STEDT's original proposal that the Tibeto-Burman root applies mainly to "light colors" (unless "brown" here originally meant "light brown"). The "cool color" sense can be attested in words like Burmese ပတ္တမြားညို (patta.mra:nyui, “emerald”), Burmese ကြာညို (kra-nyui, “blue lotus”), and Burmese ညိုပြာ (nyui-pra, “positive term for dark skin”). Lhaovo cognates also supports this archaic sense.
